Letter from the Director

Dear NVOBC members and NV outdoor community,

Winter is here! (or fall? what are the seasons anymore?)

As the weather is changing, I hope you all are finding great ways to get outdoors and recreate. As for me, I’m looking forward to getting out to the crag, and maybe dabbling in a bit of snow sports!

On a more professional note, I recently attended the Nevada Governor’s Conference on Tourism and was ecstatic to hear so much chatter about outdoor recreation. It is always nice to hear from non-outdoor industry people how important outdoor recreation is to the state’s economy.

Mandi Elliott

Soon, we will have some more tangible information on exactly how impactful our industry is. This month, the BEA will be releasing the 2023 Outdoor Industry Satellite Account (more information below), and we can leverage that information to advocate for our outdoors!

There is always exciting stuff happening in the outdoor space, so stick around and stay tuned!

Sincerely,
Mandi Elliott
Executive Director, Nevada Outdoor Business Coalition

Industry Pulse

Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account Coming Soon

On November 20th, we will receive the latest economic data for the Outdoor Recreation Industry.

Every year, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) releases vital data detailing the economic impact of the Outdoor Industry across the nation and throughout each state. This month, the BEA will be releasing the satellite report for the Outdoor Industry in 2023.

The NVOBC will be attending the announcement meeting hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, and will pass along the information provided.

This data is our secret weapon. The more evidence we have that our industry is economically impactful, the more we can advocate for investment, protection, and support!

Local News

Lee Canyon Opens for the Winter Season

Lee Canyon opened for its 2024/25 winter season on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Rabbit Peak chairlift that serves the resort’s beginner terrain will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. After record heat this summer in Las Vegas, Lee Canyon could be the second ski resort in the western U.S. to open this year; it will be the first Nevada ski resort to open. This also marks a first-ever ski/snowboard and mountain bike season overlap for a Nevada resort.

“Lee Canyon’s investment in snowmaking capabilities lets us deliver this stellar combination of adventures to our guests. We’re also a team of passionate skiers and snowboarders, so an opening is a huge win for everyone,” says Josh Bean, Lee Canyon’s director of mountain operations. “Lee Canyon is totally committed to elevating our guest experience.”

In 2011, Lee Canyon opened its Rabbit Peak chair on Saturday, Oct. 8, making it the first U.S. ski area to open for the season.

In the past five years, Lee Canyon has invested $17 million in upgrades, including two new chairlifts, a downhill mountain bike park, Hillside Lodge and expanded snowmaking and parking.
Lee Canyon’s daily winter operating hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Winter season and daily passes are on sale now at leecanyonlv.com.
