It’s time to organize, not to panic.

Letter from the Director

Dear NVOBC members and NV outdoor community,

It’s been a chaotic few weeks for our community. There’s a lot of information coming at us at a rapid pace, only to be rescinded or changed hours later. For our friends at the National Park Service, our friends who have federally funded projects and staff, for our friends who have worked tirelessly on conservation efforts that are now in jeopardy, we see you. We are here for you. We are advocating with you.

At the NVOBC, our priority is to support the OREC business community and public land access we depend on. For the foreseeable future, that means advocating against the intrusion on public land and sharing legislative information with you.

Thanks to our advisory board member, Tom Clark, we have access to legislative information that affects our industry. We will be adding a new segment to this newsletter discussing Nevada legislature as it happens.

Please know that the line of communication is open, and if there are things that you feel concerned about, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Mandi Elliott
Executive Director, Nevada Outdoor Business Coalition

Stay Informed, Not Overwhelmed

overwhelmed

We cannot make meaningful strides towards our goals if we are overwhelmed and exhausted.

Here are a few strategies we can use to stay informed about what’s going on in our government and in our communities without experiencing information overload:

Do
Focus on topics that matter to you, and allow yourself to have just a headline-level awareness of other issues unless they genuinely interest you.
Work on developing healthier habits, such as meditation or journaling, to help you disconnect from the news and improve your well-being.
Consider switching to print news to reduce anxiety and regain focus — it’s less distracting and offers more agency over what you read.

Don’t
Allow mindless scrolling to dictate your day; be intentional about when and how you engage with news.
Get caught up in social media reactions to the news — read the stories directly to avoid unnecessary anxiety.
Succumb to sensationalism; instead, channel feelings of worry and concern about political issues into meaningful action.

NATIONAL MONUMENTS PROTECT COMMUNITIES AND ECONOMIES

The NVOBC is disappointed in the "Ending Presidential Overreach on Public Lands Act" introduced by Rep Mark Amodei (NV-02) and Rep Celeste Maloy (UT-02).

The proposed legislation would strip presidential authority to designate national monuments, which would in turn damage economic opportunity for outdoor recreation communities. It is a gross misconception that public land limits economic opportunity- A report from Headwaters Economics shows the consistent improvement of local economies in communities with National Monuments.

"The study found no evidence that designating these national monuments prevented economic growth. Instead, trends in key economic indicators such as population, employment, personal income, and per capita income either continued or improved in each of the regions surrounding the national monuments."
-The Economic Importance of National Monuments to Communities

The NVOBC urges Representatives Amodei and Maloy to reconsider the effect this legislation will have on rural and outdoor communities.
